10 Days up North August 14, 2005

I was naturally very excited to get back home to see Bonnie & Tilly again. Last time I was home I remember taking Bonnie to the vet as she was barely able to walk without limping.

I left England 2 years ago with the painful memory of her arthritic pain and of her whimpering as she couldn’t jump onto the bed.

Tik soon learnt that’s shed been demoted to third in the pecking order, although there were times when a kiss from a female who hadn’t used her mouth to clean her body hair was refreshingly enjoyable.

Our time up north was exactly as I’d imagined it would be. Bonnie, Tilly and I took Tik for endless walks along canals and through the countryside. We got some time in the Loury centre in Manchester, an especially enjoyable dinner at a new-found relative’s house and enough BBQ’s, home made dinners and meals out to … erm … to eat a lot of.

It was rewarding to catch up with Grandpa Harry as well since this is the last time I’d seen him since he became widowed two years ago. It was remarkable seeing how he has made the most of his new-found independence and it was a treat to spend time with him.

Southport is quite a novelty to return to once every few years and Tik and I enjoyed strolling round a town which really keeps on improving. We had a memorable evening out with Nick Howlett in Birkdale which has suddenly become the host of a number of classy looking wine bars; granted they were filled with embarrassing middle-aged fat women who were at a degree of inebriation that they really had no concern for how pathetic they looked.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Andy Hui for bowling and crazy golf. Tik had never played before and we had a lot of fun. I’d not say any of us were any good but Andy and I drew to become the least worst players of the day.

Just in the nick of time I also managed to get to see David Wright. David is having a wonderful life; 4 day work-weeks at Barclays bank, a wedding to look forward to next year and a few weeks holiday in Vietnam as well.
