1st Day in Khao Yai Greenery Resort April 9, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Thailand , trackbackAfter a comfortable hotel breakfast Tik collected Nong Mai (her younger sister) by car and the four of us drove three hours to Khao Yai Greenery Resort to meet with the rest of Tik’s family and also with Mark and Raquel who came by taxi from Bangkok.
We’d arranged two large houses between us. One was for Tik, Myself, Lisa, Mark and Raquel, the other was for Tik’s Mum, Dad, two sisters and also Tik’s aunt.
Mark and Raquel arrived first and we followed about 10 minutes later. Our house was adequate, it was certainly large but was rigidly built and poorly maintained. We relaxed for a short time and then headed by car to ChockChai Farm.
I’ve already documented ChockChai Farm before so won’t repeat anything here. We took a 2½ hour farm tour to see behind the scenes of Asia’s largest dairy farm. Within 10 minutes of the tour starting we were met by a tropical downpour and had to don complimentary plastic macs before we boarded the tour-train.
First we visited the dairy to see how the cows were milked. Noawadays this is done via elecronic pumps although we were also shown how cows are manually milked. I found it interesting to note that the modern electronic method of milking does not expose milk to air, the milk goes from the cow into airtight tubes and bottles.
We were then ferried onto the train to a cowboy display. This was a Disney-style show where a cowboy demonstrated basic control of a horse and how he would lasoo a cow. We had a brief demonstration of how to flail a whip and were given an understanding of how cattle used to be heat-branded (although these days it is done with liquid nitrogen).
We saw a few, not-very-noteworthy animal shows and, unfortunately, due to the rain we didn’t get the opportunity to visit the on-site ice-cream parlor.
After the tour Tik’s family arrived and we ate dinner at Chockchai’s famous steakhouse together.
