A Damn Expensive Home-Cooked Dinner!
Tik’s been the one studying hard for the past few weeks and I’d been meaning to treat her to a home-cooked meal for some time now. I got a little excited when we visited Villa Supermarket that they had fresh imported aubergines for sale.
I’ve long craved the taste of a well-made stuffed aubergine dish so 10 minutes and over 3,000 baht later I filled my basket with imported ingredients. Half my money went on completely unnecessary cheeses as it’s been a while since I’ve been able to sit down with a varied cheeseboard after dinner but a lot of money went on vegetables I’d not really need but had an impulsive craving for. A box of a dozen ‘button mushrooms’ came to over 400 baht (over $10) but I bought them with not a tinge of responsibility.
I have impressed a few people with my cooking skills since I’ve been here. In Sammakorn I had the luxury of an oven and did quite a few Sunday roasts and a Christmas dinner, but cooking, like housework, is something best left to other people over here. For the price of a Mars Bar in the UK it’s possible to grab some freshly cooked street food here which is usually filling and tasty.
Tik and I eat out, or have restaurant deliveries here so often that a home-cooked meal is a really big event for us. Preparing the food took thirty minutes longer than I’d anticipated - my kitchen knives were so blunt that I was literally having to saw through tomatoes, and mincing 2 full-sized aubergines using a knife about as sharp as a ruler took a lot of determination.
We took the time to use some aromatic candles which Ying had bought for us to make the night special and we drank a bottle of Spanish wine Mark and Raquel brought over for us last month.
The food tasted great and I’ve earnt enough brownie points that I can return to my lazy ways for at least a few more weeks.
