A weekend in Petchaboon January 15, 2006

To celebreate Tik’s birthday I flew to Khon Kaen again and Tik drove her family and I to Petchaboon. Petchaboon is described as the Thai version of Switzerland, (although without the things that make Switzerland a popular destination such as the snow and the tax breaks). This holiday was an ideal opportunity to get to practice my Thai with Tik’s mum and two sisters. Her father stayed home to apparently ‘guard the house’ - he isn’t one to venture far which was a shame but it’s never big problem for me to be taking a break with three females.

I was warned by Tik’s sister that the weekend would be a cold one and, without questioning her I packed only my warmest clothes. This was a bad choice. The temperature was typical of Thailand and I spend my time sweating like crazy under my thick jeans and thick tops.

Our resort was beautiful, high into a mountain with relaxing views. Our room was equally impressive and whilst I shared with Tik, her mum and two sisters stayed in the chalet next door.

There were some fun sanitized extreme-sports at the resort and we enjoyed a ride on the louge carts and a scream-inducing ‘giant swing’ where you are swinging on a trapeze after the platform below you falls away.

The weekend was a refreshing break from my gem course although I thoroughly appreciated an early morning sleep on the Sunday when Tik took her family around the area. It was a great opportunity to practice my Thai and get to know more of Tiks family. All three ladies are fun and I feel very comfortable with them.

As we drove home to Khon Kaen Tik spoke with her mum about the dreaded sin-sot (dowry) I would need to pay should we get married. I was pleased to hear that although the price for my darling is not cheap, the money would be returned to us after the wedding. I’ll detail this more another time as I’m lazy to explain this now.

I flew back from Khon Kaen to Bangkok sunday afternoon so that I could return to my gem class the day later.
