How to Spot an English Teacher July 7, 2005

English teachers in Bangkok are fairly easy to spot. I think I’ve discovered why.

I used to teach English in Bangkok for about 2 years and I enjoyed it. The teaching species here are interesting and there’s some great and very professional teachers here.

Conversely there’s a lot of teachers who aren’t so professional and they are easy to spot a mile away. I was in Siam Square - the geographical and shopping capital of Bangkok and suddenly it dawned on me exactly why lower-salaried (is that the political correct term) teachers stick out …

It’s all in their shirts …

In Thailand for about 10 pounds you can get a tailor-made good quality shirt. For about 6 pounds you can get a nice shirt from a department store - nothing fancy but good enough for work. From a market you can get a shirt for about 2 or 3 pounds.

The cheap shirts are certainly OK and I have many of them myself. Their problem however lies in the fact that they only come in Small, Medium, Large and extra Large size. The more expensive shirts come in numerical sizes and therefore they are more likely to fit properly.

I’ll stick my neck out a bit here. I am talking from experience (if you look at the hideous shirts I wore when I was a teacher you can see that) but you can spot a poor English teacher because their shirts are too big. They’ve bought them from a market stall in a S,M,L or XL size and not been able to try it on. Next time you walk around Bangkok take a look for the guys with the baggy shirts and see if you can guess where they carry their marker pens.
