Lisa’s 24th Birthday August 6, 2005

Posted by Martin in : Overseas Travel , trackback

Unfortunately for Lisa, her insignificant little birthday was eclipsed by the grandeur of the family wedding although she was certainly compensated for it by the opportunity to use the “wow, all these celebrations, just for MY birthday” gag for weeks without it once becoming annoying.

I guess Lisa and I fought like cat and dog (I was the dog, but sometimes we switched) for a great many years. At that time we couldn’t have really been more opposite. I was an academic, she was more .. erm .. well, dumb I guess (sorry). She had lots of scary female friends who either got themselves pregnant at 16 or had a body that looked liked they were. I was the traveller, the adventurer and she was a home girl who was at home because she couldn’t perhaps be bothered to leave it.

How the tables have turned in the last 6 years or so. Not only did Lisa get to university, but she worked hard and graduated 2 years ago. At that time I’d not seen her for 2 years and I remember how impressed I was in visiting her student house, seeing her lifestyle, seeing the quality friends she had made and noticing a remarkable improvement in her self-confidence.

She then took 2 years to travel alone through Australia and New Zealand. She did this using her own savings, not accumulating any student debts, and in doing so she has become an incredibly responsible and focused sister.

She has made herself very employable, much more so than myself, and she is experienced in all manner of work. Seeing her after her travels, seeing her develop a friendship with Tik and seeing her mix with people at the wedding made me feel very proud.

Well done Lisa.

By the way Lisa IS still single and available … It’d be so lovely for her to have a nice boyfriend by August next year when we have a family reunion in Italy. Any eligible males out there? Get a girl with her own career, car and a European holiday as part of the package…. awaiting your bids.
