Tigers, Elephants, Monkeys and Guns April 6, 2006

I’ve no idea at all as to how Lisa managed to wake up before we did. We received our ‘get-out-of-bed-you-lazy-bastard’ call about 9am and went down for a typical hotel buffet breakfast.

I’m making an effort to control my eating so I stuck mainly with fruit and juices today. I’m trying to wean myself away from eating steaks every day as I’d done for much of the last 3 months although physically I still feel and think I look a lot thinner than I really am.

We had a busy day today. We visited Sri Racha Tiger Zoo (second time for Tik and I) so that Lisa could get some ticks on her must-do checklist. Over the space of two hours or so she got to cradle a baby tiger, saw the impressive elephant show, saw the pig which can perform maths and got to take a bite of a crocodile meat kebab. It was hot there and busy due to a national Thai holiday but the showtimes were convenient and we got in and out quite fast.

We’d planned on a meal out for lunch but changed plans when we passed one of many Elephant camps along the road. Here was the chance to tick off some more from Lisa’s wishlist. Although the company was not cheap we managed to get to shoot some guns at the shooting range (Lisa did the best, then Tik. I limped in with a credible but not-good-enough performance. Between the three of us though I’m sure we’re a force to be reckoned with.

There was also a monkey training school on premises. We got a private show. In Thailand monkeys are not just trained to ride bicycles and jump through hoops but are in fact used in indutry. Whilst yes we did see the monkey-on-a-bike routine it was more interesting to watch them climbing trees to ‘unscrew’ coconuts so that they dropped to the ground. The monkey also demonstrated its ability to collect coconuts, put them into a cart and wheel it around.

Tik discovered that by posing as our tour-guide she could get a kick-back from the company for our payments. Lisa and I did a 30 minute Elephant trek. With the money Tik received as we were happily bouncing about the countryside we effectively paid half price for the service.

It was another late lunch today. Exhausted we ordered room-service from the hotel so we could shield ourself away from the heat outside. We took a nap and I went for a swim.

We visited Cabbages and Condoms restaurant with Lisa. Tik and I were there a few weeks ago when Barry visited and we were quite impressed by this large restaurant. We got a beach-side table and gave Lisa the opportunity to experience a more traditional Thai meal than we’d had before. We ordered a number of small dishes to share between us and left just before the restaurant closed at 11pm.
