Meeting Mark & Racquel in Bangkok April 7, 2006

Tik was the supergirl of the morning today. She wa up about 7am to go swimming. We’ve both gotten infected with the swimming bug and she came back delighted with her progress.

After breakfast we checked out of the hotel to return to Bangkok. The drive was arduous with the traffic but we returned to Bangkok Garden with enoug time to shower, relax and to briefly catch up with my friend Steve. Tik and I then went to pick up Uncle Mark and Racquel from the airport who arrived without problems.

I’ve not seen either of them for 3 years (last family reunion in Italy) and I was imediately impressed by how much better Racquel’s English has gotten. This was the first opportunity Tik had to meet with them although she’d spoken briefly on the phone to Mark before.

Seeing as Mark and Racquel were not so tired we took them back to the apartment to relax. As the traffic was not so appealin we stayed home for a few hours before we all went out to the ‘Blue Elephant’ restaurant in Suresak. None of us had been there before but the building was beautiful, the service was great and we got the opportunity to try a sample of traditional Thai foods. I especially appreciated the chance to sample buffalo meat which was much softer than I’d have guessed it would be. We were at the restaurant for a couple of hours, slowly undoing all the benefits I’d gained in the past week with my exercising.

We took Mark and Raquel to their hotel. Tik found a wonderful half-price deal at the Amari Boulevard in Sukumvit soi 5. The only catch was that she had to pretend to be Mark’s partner whilst checking in because the offer was exclusively for Thai people. I therefore had a fleeting opportunitiy of borrowing Racquel to be my partner for the duration of the check-in but didn’t make full use of the opportunity.

We ended the night in an exhausted stupor down the road from the hotel admiring the view in a ladyboy bar. We didn’t stay long there but just wanted to give Mark and Racquel a quick introducion to Sukumvit. We were lucky enough to bump into a young elephant just outside the hotel and also to buy some horrific fried grasshoppers to crunch on. During the few hours Mark and Raquel set foot on Asian soil they’d had a very complete first day.
